Hulu’s ‘The Jewel Thief’ Premieres, Scored by Brad Oberhofer

The Jewel Thief, a new documentary scored by Brad Oberhofer (he/him), premieres today on Hulu. Directed by Landon Van Soest and produced by Submarine Deluxe, this film tells the unbelievable yet true story of Gerald Blanchard, a notorious thrill-seeking thief who perpetrated several intercontinental heists that grew increasingly elaborate and extravagant, from robbing banks all the way to stealing a royal crown jewel. In this first-hand retelling, two Winnipeg detectives describe their hunt for Blanchard across the globe, while Blanchard tells his own side of the experience, in a cat and mouse game driven by deception, competition, and ultimately obsession.

In the same globe-trotting spirit, Brad has composed a score derived from a wide breadth of genres. There are groovy moments harkening back to the police chase scenes of the 70's, hip-hop elements embodying a rebellious teenage spirit, ethereal string pads for times of intimate introspection, and dark industrial synths for intense clashes on the hunt. The score truly encompasses multiple facets of Gerald's life as it unfolds from his early days to the height of his criminal renown.
