EmmoLei Sankofa scores Hulu Original Feature ‘Three Ways’
Composer and multi-instrumentalist EmmoLei Sankofa (she/her) has scored the Hulu original feature ‘Three Ways’, a sex comedy directed by Jamal Dedeaux and starring Andrea Lewis, Brittany S. Hall, and Jerrel O’Neal. The film revolves around innocent Stacey Johnson trying to take back her life by diving into a budding romantic relationship that unfolds in a very unexpected way.
The music’s strengths lie in its fresh percussive and vocal elements. Several cues highlight a jazzy and playful improvisation on drum set while layering punctuated bongos, clave, and shakers. EmmoLei also notably adds in her own voice as instrumentation, sometimes shouting warlike chants, other times using rhythmic breath to capture a heated, primal intensity with a touch of quirkiness and absurdity. The significance of “three” also plays a major role in the rhythmic and ostinato motifs woven throughout the score, something that EmmoLei featured strongly in her writing process.
'Three Ways' is the first original feature from Andscape, a Black-led media platform dedicated to creating, highlighting, and uplifting the diverse stories of Black identity. It is part of The Walt Disney Company and is a reimagination, expansion and diversification of The Undefeated’s former platform.
