Bio
Constantly tinkering with new methods of how to replicate human emotion through manipulated sound, Matthew Wang (he/him) is an award-winning film and television composer, producer, and multi-instrumentalist based in New York and Los Angeles. He creates inventive scores and soundscapes that pull from his background in pop songwriting and production—which focuses on building entire sonic worlds out of pithy narratives—as well as his technical expertise in electronic sound design and programming.
With his versatile skills that allow him to compose for various genres and audiences, Wang has written music for a vast range of different projects—from the Pharrell Williams-executive produced Netflix kids program Brainchild (2018), to Shaquille O’Neal’s basketball animated short HeadNoise (2021), for which he was awarded a Hollywood Music In Media Award in the category Best Song for Short Film. His extensive television composing credits include NBC’s The Young Rock (2022) and New Amsterdam (2018-2022), Showtime’s Yellowjackets (2021-2022), Hulu’s Shrill (2019-2021), Netflix’s Ginny and Georgia (2021) and Glow (2019), HBO’s Mrs. Fletcher (2019). He found his first feature film in IFC Midnight’s thriller Centigrade (2020), which he co-composed alongside Trey Toy, and went on to co-compose the television films RENO! 911: It's a Wonderful Heist (2022) and RENO! 911: The Hunt for QANON (2021) with Craig Wedren.
Beside narrative work, Wang has worked closely with documentarian Joseph Juhn on his set of acclaimed films, Jeronimo (2019), which sheds light on the little known story of the Korean diaspora in Cuba, and Chosen (2022), which followed five Korean Americans of different backgrounds and political views in their respective 2020 runs for Congressional office. “I’m inspired by shows and films that challenge the audience to think differently about the world,” Wang says.
Regardless of format or genre, Wang’s creative process begins by searching for creative, sometimes counterintuitive solutions so that instruments can emulate the nuanced experiences of the characters on screen, whether its playing a bass up high on the fret so it sounds like it’s “crying” or Auto-Tuning the life out of a cello to portray a protagonist's quest for perfection. He calls this “method composing,” which is “addressing the story through sound first, before even thinking about the harmony or structure of the song itself,” he explains.
This sensitivity toward sound’s emotive nature is also due to Wang’s attention to ambient noise, and its inherent ability to impart the stories of one's surroundings. Born and raised in New York City, he finds inspiration from the countless characters that can be found in the sounds that can be captured and found within the bustling urban environment, and has built up a portfolio of stock sounds that are based on these field recordings.
Having played violin and guitar in his youth, Wang spent his teenage years playing early gigs around Manhattan in a rock band, which led him to discover his fondness for Ableton and electronic music processes. While later attending the pop production-focused Clive Davis Institute of Music at NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts, he began writing music for advertisements. The challenge of creating “earworms, which have to be even more concise than in pop music,” appealed to him.
Wang is currently at work on his debut solo album, Ambia, which combines his interest in music psychology and video game music for an unfolding, potentially limitless audio experience that seamlessly evolves as part of the listener’s daily life.
